Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add the grated butter and stir just until the butter is incorporated.

1

Pour buttermilk on top of flour mixture. Stir just until combined -- you don't want to overwork the dough. The dough will look crumbly like so.

2

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Gently use your hands, to combine the dough and pat the dough into a 1-inch-thick rectangle.

3

Fold the left side to the middle and then the right side on top like folding a letter to create more flaky layers.

4

We flatten the folded dough, rotate and repeat again three times. This helps create lots of wonderful layers.

5

We cut our the dough into circles with a cookie cutter, brush with more buttermilk and bake in a 450-degree oven.

6

While the shortcakes bake, we cook our apple filling on the stove until it's nice and bubbly -- it's so delicious!

7

As the last step, we whip together heavy cream, maple syrup and vanilla -- just like that, we have our maple whipped cream!
