Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Handheld citrus juicer
  • Jigger or small measuring cup

Ingredients

  • Water or lime wedge cut in center for salted rim, optional
  • Coarse sea salt for salted rim, optional
  • Freshly grated lime and orange zest for salted rim, optional
  • 2 ounces tequila preferably reposado
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 ounce orange liqueur preferably Cointreau or Grand Marnier for top shelf
  • ½ ounce simple syrup
  • Ice

Instructions

  • For an optional salted rim, pour some water onto a small plate and mix together the coarse sea salt and zests on a separate small plate. Dip the rim of the glass in the water to moisten. Alternatively, you can run a lime slice along the glass. Swirl the moisten rim into the salt mixture. Set aside.
  • Add the tequila, lime juice, orange juice, orange liqueur, simple syrup and ice to a cocktail shaker.
  • Put on the top and shake vigorously, about 15-30 seconds.
  • Strain into the serving glass filled with ice. If desired, garnish with a lime wheel or orange slice. Enjoy!

Notes

8-serving pitcher recipe: Add 2 cups tequila, 1 cup lime juice, 1 cup orange juice, 1 cup orange liqueur, ½ cup simple syrup and a handful or two of ice to a large pitcher. Cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When you're ready to serve, stir the mixture again and shake as directed, planning for 5 ounces per drink. This method gives you proper dilution and aeration for the best texture.
If you want guests to serve themselves, add a handful or two of ice and stir for 15-30 seconds to add some of the dilution you'd get with shaking. However, you won't get the aeration. Keep a spoon around for periodic stirring.
  • Use limes that have some give when you press into them. Hard limes are dried out.
  • Agave nectar can be substituted for simple syrup in the same quantity.
