Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Handheld citrus juicer
  • Jigger or small measuring cup

Ingredients

  • Lime slice slit in the middle, for garnish, optional
  • Coarse sea salt or kosher salt for garnish, optional
  • 2 ounces tequila preferably reposado
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 ounce orange liqueur
  • 1 ounce simple syrup or agave nectar
  • Ice
  • Splash of chilled prosecco
  • Lime wedge for garnish, optional

Instructions

  • For an optional salted rim, run the lime slice along the rim of the margarita glass to moisten. Spread the salt on a small plate and swirl the rim in the salt. Set aside.
  • Add tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, simple syrup and ice to a cocktail shaker.
  • Secure the cocktail shaker top. Shake vigorously for 15-30 seconds.
  • Strain the margarita into an ice-filled glass.
  • Top with a splash of chilled prosecco. Gently stir to combine. If desired, add a lime wedge to the side of the glass for an additional garnish. Enjoy!

Notes

8-serving pitcher: Stir together 2 cups tequila, 1 cup lime juice, 1 cup orange liqueur and 1 cup simple syrup in a large pitcher. Cover and refrigerate up to 24 hours. When you're ready to serve, stir again and pour 5 ounces per drink (just over ½ cup) into a cocktail shaker and shake as originally directed. Strain and top with prosecco.
Shaking gives us the necessary aeration for a better texture and dilution, but pre-mixing in a pitcher will still save a lot of time and energy when entertaining. Most cocktail shakers can hold two drinks at a time.
  • Do not shake the prosecco with the rest of the drink. Shaking a carbonated beverage can cause a big mess, and it flattens the carbonation.
