Ingredients
Vodka: As always, we want to use the best spirit that fits our budget. For some recommendations, Tito’s or Ketel One are great mid-range vodkas, or you could go with Grey Goose for a premium vodka.
Raspberry purée: All we need are raspberries and water to make our purée.
Lime juice: We definitely want fresh lime juice. Bottled lime juice lacks the flavor and brightness of fresh juice.
Ginger beer: Feel free to use your favorite brand. Fever Tree is usually my go-to, thanks to its perfect spice kick, but this Regatta brand is also lovely. You can also check out this list of best ginger beers for some more brand recommendations.
Garnishes: This is completely optional, but a lime wheel, additional fresh raspberries and a sprig of mint add a lovely touch.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: To make our mule, we add the raspberry purée, vodka, lime juice and plenty of ice cubes to a copper mug (photo 1).
Step 2: Using a bar spoon, we stir the drink until condensation starts to build outside of the mug (photo 2). This should take about 15 seconds or so.
Step 3: Now we top the raspberry mixture with that fizzy ginger beer and gently stir to combine the mixture (photo 3).
Step 4: For our final step, we add our garnishes for an extra fun touch (photo 4).
Pro tip: If garnishing with fresh mint, quickly clap the mint in the palm of your hands before adding to the mug. This helps release the mint’s fragrance.
Let’s take a sip and enjoy that fresh raspberry flavor. Isn’t that one delicious raspberry mule?
How to Batch in Advance of Serving
Of course, you might want a premixed batch of raspberry mules for parties. Here’s how I recommend preparing a pitcher.
- Stir together the vodka, raspberry purée and lime juice in a large pitcher.
- Cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.
- Stir again and then pour the raspberry mixture into copper mugs filled with ice.
- Top with ginger beer.

Recipe FAQs
The process is simple — add raspberries to a blender with a splash of water and blend until smooth. Just like that, you have your raspberry purée.
The insulation of a copper mug is great for keeping your raspberry mule frosty on a hot summer night, but you can also use a double old fashioned glass or a Collins glass as an alternative.
I don’t recommend substituting the two. Ginger beer has a much spicier kick than ginger ale. While both contain sweeteners, ginger ale is sweeter than ginger beer. When you take into account the spice and sweet levels, they’re very different drinks. You’ll end up with an entirely different cocktail if you use ginger ale.
Absolutely, you can use a zero-spirit vodka for the regular vodka. These days, most ginger beers are nonalcoholic, so you don’t have to worry there.
Variations and Substitutions
- Try another fruit purée: Think strawberry, blueberries or blackberries. You can see my peach mule for some inspiration.
- Muddle with fresh herbs or jalapeño: Fresh mint is my favorite herb for this drink, or a few jalapeño slices give it an extra spicy touch.
- Substitute another spirit: Gin, rum, bourbon and tequila all work nicely. These spirits are base for other mules, like the Kentucky mule, Jamaican mule or London mule, and work nicely with fruit additions.
- Add bitters for another flavor profile: Some orange bitters add a sweet citrus flavor, or you can experiment with your other favorite varieties.
- Give it an extra boost of raspberry flavor: Try a raspberry vodka instead of plain vodka. You could even add a little Chambord or my raspberry simple syrup if you like sweeter cocktails.
Expert Tips
Use fresh or frozen raspberries — your choice: Just make sure to thaw the raspberries first for easier, smoother blending.
Chill the ginger beer before serving: Since we use a generous amount of ginger beer, we want to make sure we keep the drink icy cold.
Place the copper mug in the freezer before mixing: Like above, this helps make for an ultra refreshing raspberry Moscow mule.
