Why You’ll Love This Raspberry Moscow Mule

  • Calls for fresh, real ingredients for the best flavor. No fake mixers here.
  • Easy for home bartenders of all skill levels. If you can stir, you have the skills necessary to make the perfect Moscow mule.
  • Includes a batching option because hosting is always easier when a pitcher of cocktails is on the menu.
  • Ultra customizable to suit your taste. The original recipe is wonderful as is, or you have lots of options to put your own fun twist on the drink.

Ingredients

The drink ingredients on a cream-colored wooden board with black and white labels by the items.

Vodka: As always, we want to use the best spirit that fits our budget. For some recommendations, Tito’s or Ketel One are great mid-range vodkas, or you could go with Grey Goose for a premium vodka.

Raspberry purée: All we need are raspberries and water to make our purée.

Lime juice: We definitely want fresh lime juice. Bottled lime juice lacks the flavor and brightness of fresh juice.

Ginger beer: Feel free to use your favorite brand. Fever Tree is usually my go-to, thanks to its perfect spice kick, but this Regatta brand is also lovely. You can also check out this list of best ginger beers for some more brand recommendations.

Garnishes: This is completely optional, but a lime wheel, additional fresh raspberries and a sprig of mint add a lovely touch.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: To make our mule, we add the raspberry purée, vodka, lime juice and plenty of ice cubes to a copper mug (photo 1).

A hand pouring the raspberry purée into a copper mug on a cream-colored wooden board to start mixing the drink.

Step 2: Using a bar spoon, we stir the drink until condensation starts to build outside of the mug (photo 2). This should take about 15 seconds or so.

A hand stirring a long bar spoon to combine the raspberry mixture in the copper mug.

Step 3: Now we top the raspberry mixture with that fizzy ginger beer and gently stir to combine the mixture (photo 3).

Pouring the ginger beer into the copper mug and stirring the drink and adding ice.

Step 4: For our final step, we add our garnishes for an extra fun touch (photo 4).

Pro tip: If garnishing with fresh mint, quickly clap the mint in the palm of your hands before adding to the mug. This helps release the mint’s fragrance.

Let’s take a sip and enjoy that fresh raspberry flavor. Isn’t that one delicious raspberry mule?

How to Batch in Advance of Serving

Of course, you might want a premixed batch of raspberry mules for parties. Here’s how I recommend preparing a pitcher.

  • Stir together the vodka, raspberry purée and lime juice in a large pitcher.
  • Cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.
  • Stir again and then pour the raspberry mixture into copper mugs filled with ice.
  • Top with ginger beer.

You can find the full proportions in the notes section of the recipe card.

Recipe FAQs

How do you prepare homemade raspberry purée?

The process is simple — add raspberries to a blender with a splash of water and blend until smooth. Just like that, you have your raspberry purée.

What drinkware can you use besides a copper mug?

The insulation of a copper mug is great for keeping your raspberry mule frosty on a hot summer night, but you can also use a double old fashioned glass or a Collins glass as an alternative.

Can you use ginger ale instead of ginger beer?

I don’t recommend substituting the two. Ginger beer has a much spicier kick than ginger ale. While both contain sweeteners, ginger ale is sweeter than ginger beer. When you take into account the spice and sweet levels, they’re very different drinks. You’ll end up with an entirely different cocktail if you use ginger ale.

Can you make a nonalcoholic raspberry mule?

Absolutely, you can use a zero-spirit vodka for the regular vodka. These days, most ginger beers are nonalcoholic, so you don’t have to worry there.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Try another fruit purée: Think strawberry, blueberries or blackberries. You can see my peach mule for some inspiration.
  • Muddle with fresh herbs or jalapeño: Fresh mint is my favorite herb for this drink, or a few jalapeño slices give it an extra spicy touch.
  • Substitute another spirit: Gin, rum, bourbon and tequila all work nicely. These spirits are base for other mules, like the Kentucky mule, Jamaican mule or London mule, and work nicely with fruit additions.
  • Add bitters for another flavor profile: Some orange bitters add a sweet citrus flavor, or you can experiment with your other favorite varieties.
  • Give it an extra boost of raspberry flavor: Try a raspberry vodka instead of plain vodka. You could even add a little Chambord or my raspberry simple syrup if you like sweeter cocktails.

Expert Tips

Use fresh or frozen raspberries — your choice: Just make sure to thaw the raspberries first for easier, smoother blending.

Chill the ginger beer before serving: Since we use a generous amount of ginger beer, we want to make sure we keep the drink icy cold.

Place the copper mug in the freezer before mixing: Like above, this helps make for an ultra refreshing raspberry Moscow mule.

Perfect Pairing

With a raspberry cocktail, what's better than these mini raspberry mojito pies? The fresh mint and spicy ginger work beautifully together.

For a very berry cocktail, you'll love every refreshing sip of this fresh raspberry Moscow mule. Your perfect summer evening calls for this raspberry mule in hand.

Cheers!

Loved that tangy lime juice and sweet raspberry purée together - absolutely delicious. I liked the idea of adding some jalapeño slices, so I tried that. I’m a big fan of spicy cocktails and loved the extra heat. So refreshing! It's my new favorite drink!
